Why Work With Us

The history of NM Black Cat Cultural Enterprises reflects a grassroots evolution from bar-room entertainment to a dedicated Nob Hill community center. [1]

🎭 Timeline & Historical Milestones

  • 2015–2016 (The Cabaret Roots): The concept began at Sidewinders Bar and Grill, a prominent local venue. Renato and Michael Estacio-Burdick transformed the dance floor into a performance hub called the Black Cat Cabaret. Initially showcasing drag performers, as well as the first known Mx title through the Sidewinders competition, it quickly expanded to include burlesque, comedy, belly dancing, and live singers, giving hundreds of marginalized local artists a stage. [2]
  • November 2020 (Establishing the Nonprofit): Recognizing the need for an inclusive, all-ages, and substance-free environment, the founders officially established NM Black Cat Cultural Enterprises as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. [3, 4]
  • May 2021 (The Physical Move): The pandemic caused the tragic closure of Albuquerque's beloved Aux Dog Theatre company. The Black Cat team took over the vacated space near Nob Hill's Triangle Plaza, officially opening in early May 2021 with support from local political figures like Mayor Tim Keller. The new hub built out a theater space, a fundraising thrift store, and an education center. [5]
  • 2025 (New Leadership & Transition): After years of building the foundation, Dr. Renato Estacio stepped back from executive duties. Choreographer and creative director Trey Pickett (co-founder of VIIIzon Academy) stepped in as the director, steering the center toward modern performance art, mental health resources, and expanded dance and podcasting studios. 🌟 Core Vision

Throughout its shift from a bar showcase to an educational non-profit, the core mission has remained unchanged: providing an explicit, safe, and sober sanctuary for LGBTQIA+ locals, youth, and anyone who feels uncomfortable in traditional, mainstream community spaces. [5, 9]
